complications of hydroxyapatite and medpor ocular implants following enucleation

چکیده
purpose: to compare complications and motility of hydroxyapatite versus medpor ocular implants after enucleation at ahvaz imam hospital (from jan 2010 to jun 2011). methods: in a clinical trial, 50 patients scheduled for enucleation were randomly divided in two groups of 25 patients. group 1 underwent enucleation + hydroxyapatite (ha) and group 2 underwent enucleation + medor implant. all patients were operated by 2 surgeons. then patients were visited 10, 30, 90 and 180 days after surgery for complication and motility. results: patient age ranged from 8 to 68 years with a mean of 36.3 years, 52% of the patients were male and 48% were female. the most common used implant was 18 by size, the most common cause of loss of vision was trauma and the most common cause of surgery was cosmetic reasons in both groups. complications in both groups were similar and the rate was high in both group in the early postoperative days. the most common complication was mucopurulent discharge, in the first month was 36% that reduced to 8% in the end of study. mean amount of ocular motility was more in abduction: 4.72 mm and 4.58 mm in ha and medpor groups respectively but it was less in upgaze; 3.18 in ha and 3.14 in medpor groups. complications and motility were similar in two groups and there was no significant difference (p= 0.99). conclusion: according to our study, the rate of complications and motility are similar in ha and medpor ocular implant after enucleation.

OBJECTIVE To determine the incidence of postoperative rotation of flattened hydroxyapatite enucleation implants. METHODS A retrospective review of patients receiving flattened hydroxyapatite enucleation implants was performed to determine the incidence and severity of postoperative implant misalignment. RESULTS Flattened hydroxyapatite implants had been placed in 16 patients. Five were note...

AIM To evaluate the complications associated with pegging of porous hydroxyapatite orbital implants. METHODS Complications associated with pegging were retrospectively reviewed from the charts of 100 of 133 patients with hydroxyapatite implantation from 1993 to 2000. RESULTS 48 (48%) of the 100 hydroxyapatite implanted patients who had undergone pegging were found to have problems with thei...
متن کاملEvaluation of efficacy and complications: primary pediatric orbital implants after enucleation.
BACKGROUND Orbital implants are used routinely in pediatric patients at the time of enucleation. Complications, such as exposure, ptosis, and infection, may occur after implantation. Controversy continues regarding the rate of complications with newer implants in the pediatric population. OBJECTIVE To examine the effects of orbital implants on children whose eyes have been enucleated. METHO...
متن کاملProblem of orbital implants after enucleation.
GREAT efforts have been made by ophthalmologists in the last 10 years to design an implant conveying good prosthetic mobility, to offset in part the tragic result of excision. The immediate success of the implants aroused enthusiasm, but subsequent complications, including suppuration and expulsion, have led to further modifications. So frequent were these disappointments in spite of changes in...
